Catch a Mad Scientist Part I

You enter the Adventure Quest Club (AQC) clubhouse at the time you agreed to meet NyteLyte and pilot test her Halloween Quest for her. NyteLyte isn't here yet, so you decide to take a look at the first clue. It reads:

=====================================
Welcome to the Adventure Quest Club, Quest of the Week. This quest is sponsored by Adventure Quest Club and Josie2. The quest will run from now through Sunday, October 26th. Three AQC member finishers will be randomly selected to win $1000t. You must be a premium member to win. If you have any questions about the quest, please IM or email me. Good Luck and have fun.
======================================

How strange. There isn't a question or any information explaining how to get to the next clue. It looks as if Nyte didn't finish writing the quest. But if that were the case, then why would she ask you to pilot it for her. You search the stage and find a clue! You find a small envelope...

A Small Envelope --You pick up a small envelope that looks as if it had fallen off the podium on the AQC stage. The outside of the envelope says "Clue". Inside is a slip of paper with notes about Nyte's Halloween Quest. It looks as if it is a list of locations Nyte was considering using for her quest.

Strange, Nyte would never leave her notes just laying around for anyone to see! You try to IM her, but she doesn't answer. She must be busy setting up the quest. You don't feel like just standing around waiting and you know Nyte wouldn't want these notes laying around. So, you decide to investigate the circled location mentioned in the notes.

You teleport to the base of the Tyr Tower and look around for Nyte's Nametag. You don't see it, so you search around the base of the Tyr Tower, in the Templar Room and finally the tower heights. As you near the crystal you notice that something or someone is inside the crystal. You hoverpack over to get a closer view.

It's Nyte! You fly up close to the crystal."Hi'ya Nyte! I didn't see you from down below." You call through the glass. "I thought we were meeting at the AQC?"

Nyte doesn't respond. She just stands in the center of the crystal staring straight ahead. You hop out of your pack and climb into the crystal to get a closer look. Nyte's skin is cold and although it's difficult to see in this light, she appears quite pale. You call her name but she doesn't respond. You tap her on the shoulder and she doesn't move, she just stairs blankly into space.
You look around for any explanation of what is going on. Suddenly NyteLyte's hands shoot out and grab your arms tightly. She pins your arms to your sides with a force you can hardly believe she'd be capable of. She looks directly into your eyes and screams "Lazlo STOP Lazlo". Then she shoves you forcefully through the door in the Tyr Tower Crystal.
Without your pack, you fall down... down... down... splash!
This day sure isn't turning out as you'd expected it to!

You land with a splash in the cold Tower mote. Ouch! What the heck is going on? You pick your cold damp self up and start to look for way back up to the tower. That is when you notice a quest clue near by. It's the second clue for Nyte's quest. She must have been down here setting up when she was... what attacked? Who or what is Lazlo? Definitely something has happened but you have many more questions than answers.

You put on your pack and start back up. That is when you notice the strange glowing green markings on the rock walls. Could this be a trail? With no other leads, you decide to follow the green tracks. They lead south and straight up out of the mote, then past some monoliths with the Tyr Island Map on your right... still going mosty southward, you hike up a shallow ramp. You stop to rest when the tracks cross a bridge heading west.

Catch a Mad Scientist Part II

East side of the bridge The mysterious trail leads west cross the bridge and through a valley of uneven terrain which slowly turns to the north. You round a corner and spot another bridge. The green mist trail crosses the bridge. You carefully make your way up to the bridge along a narrow ramp on the right side of the canyon. It is very slow going. You almost lose your footing several times. Half way up to the bridge, you stop to rest.
You finally make it up to the bridge. Crossing the bridge, you notice that the trail is beginning to dissipate. You still aren't sure the trail has anything to do with Nyte's condition or with whatever Lazlo is. You've come this far however, and you are reluctant to go back to Nyte before you know what has happened. She might try throwing you off the tower again! You cross the bridge and follow the trail up to a monolith.

The mist seems to get heavy near the monolith, so you stop to investigate. There are two symbols on the monolith. The top symbol is an arrow pointing ahead. The bottom symbol is what? (pi)
You don't see anything special about this monolith compared with any of the others you have seen on Tyr and the trail is now disappearing fast. You run through the canyon in a mostly westerly direction after the spectral haze. You come to yet another bridge as the last of the fog fades into nothingness. Now what are you going to do?

You let out an exasperated sigh as the last of the trail fades away. Now what? You wonder. Maybe you should go back to the AQC to recruit some help? You look about for another clue. To the north you see one! Above you is yet another bridge. This one has an eerie green glow emanating from inside. Whatever it is it can't be good! You put on your pack and hover over to the glowing bridge to investigate.

You discover that there is a dwelling built into the side of the bridge. Inside is what appears to be a science lab. No one appears to be present, but the room still looks dangerous. Before touching anything you decide to look everything over. To the right of the entrance are lab tables and equipment. Several experiments appear to be taking place. You also see a lab notebook. To the left of the door you see...

Catch a Mad Scientist Part III

"Holy flaming bananas!" You gasp. Are you really seeing what you think you are seeing? Go closer and check it out.

Then you read the Lab notebook.

The Lab Notebook of Dr. Lazlo
Day #53 First successful tag extraction. The newbie died of course, but that was to be expected. Unfortunately, all of the life force within the tag drained away in the first few minutes. Tomorrow will begin trials on preservatives.

Day #57 Infiltrated the Island Guide Program to give me access to more specimens. The life force of newbies is weak and inferior however so many of them immigrate each day that no one will notice their disappearance.

Day #72 Managed to get two tags back to the lab before all the life force was gone. Preservation method #23 is a success! Discovered that subjects live as long as life force remains within their tags. And if subject is killed after tag is removed, life force in tag dies as well. Will have to keep all subjects alive until process is complete.

Day #74 The life force transplant procedure worked as theorized. Subject's life force can be drawn from their tag and transferred into any other living being through the use of the crystals and moonlight. I've never felt younger, stronger, better. This is just the beginning. With enough life I shall become immortal! Finished testing on newbies. Have abandoned Island Guide facade and will begin collecting premium member tags tomorrow.

Day #75 Collected first premium tag. New moon put life transfer on hold. I can wait. Once the full moon comes I will never have to wait for anything I want ever again! Day #86 Still collecting tags. Will run out of room to hide bodies soon. Under the Templar nearly full. Keeping an eye on the area to be sure no one finds the bodies. Or at least no one finds the bodies leaves able to talk about it!

Day #88 Caught a pesky quest writer hanging around Templar. Captured her tag and preserving it now. No room under Templar, so left her in the crystal. Full moon tonight and after that I will be immortal. No more need to hide! Leaving to charge transfer crystals from top of Mount Rat's Eye. Then the world will be mine! mine! mine!

Your blood has gone cold. You finish reading Dr. Lazlo's lab notes. You tuck the notebook into your pack for safe keeping. You decide you had better check the rest of his lab before deciding what to do next.

Upstairs you find a hammock, a moth bitten blanket and an old comic book collection. You remember hearing on TV once that all of the real nutcases began by reading comic books or playing Internet games, but until now you didn't believe it. You sit on the hammock and collect your thoughts...

So this Dr. Lazlo has been kidnapping people and using his science to rip their name tags right off of their bodies. You've never heard of anything as evil as this! According to his notebook, he has already murdered several newbies and now he's about to kill all these premium avatars as well. In the process, if his calculations are correct, he will become immortal.

You can't let this happen! Tonight is the full moon, it must BE day 88 in Lazlo's notes! Dr. Lazlo must have taken Nyte's name tag not long before you found her. Then brought the name tag back here and put it in the preservation chamber. Thank goodness he wrote in his lab book before he left. You reread Lazlo's notes.

You know exactly where he has gone! You call all your buddies to assist you and travel to the top of Mount Rat's Eye. Dr. Lazlo is there charging a crystal in the moonlight. You tackle him to the ground and grab the crystal. Dr. Lazlo attempts to take it back. All your friends tackle him to the ground. Lazlo bursts into tears. He beats his fists on the ground and screams "It's not fair! I want to be invincible!"

You call the authorities. Dr. Lazlo is taken into custody. NyteLyte is rescued from the Tyr Tower Crystal and all of the other Avies are retrieved from under the Templar. After carefully reading Dr. Lazlo's notes, the Doctor's of St. Mackie's Hospital in Lagoland are able to revive everyone!

This is the story used in NyteLyte's Halloween Quest for 2008. Hope you enjoyed it!
